ELF/ULF/VLF & Low Frequencies

Sigint Solutions EMF laboratory has been assessed by the Cyprus Accreditation Body (CYSAB), according to the accreditation criteria for Test and Measurements Laboratories, as defined in the quality standard CYS EN ISO/IEC 17025, and in February 2014 received an accreditation to perform EMF Measurement Studies in the frequency range 5Hz – 400kHz



EMF Measurements

The EMF measurement service extents, but is not limited, in the following fields:
  • Evaluation of Electromagnetic Field exposure in the vicinity of Electric Power Lines, power substations, power transformers
  • Evaluation of Electromagnetic Field exposure in the environment of electrical and electronic devices and electrical installations
  • Evaluation of Electromagnetic Field exposure in electronic underfloor heating systems
  • Evaluation of Electromagnetic Field exposure in solar power installations
  • Identification of low frequency Electromagnetic sources in building and other areas

EMF Measurement Equipment

State of the art testing equipment is currently used by the EMF measurement Laboratory. Calibration of the testing equipment is constantly up to date and the proper operation of the equipment test bed is repeatedly verified by internal procedure, according to the CYS EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard.

The equipment tested comprises of the following:
  • Electric and Magnetic Fieldmeter with tri-axis probe
  • Laptop PC with specialized EMF measurement result analysis software
The aforementioned equipment test bed ascertains the full analysis of the electromagnetic field within the spectrum 5Hz – 400kHz.
Sigint Solutions commitment to Health and Safety regulations, enforce the use of additional equipment that will guarantee, at the highest level, the safety of personnel during the EMF measurement procedure as well as inside the laboratory premises.

Measurement Methodology

The methodology used is based on the CEI/IEC 61786:1998 standard for measurement of low-frequency magnetic and electric fields with regards to exposure of human beings.

Different measurement procedures are followed by the technician/engineers according to the location of measurement (Power lines, power substations, transformers, electrical and electronic devices, underfllor electric heating systems, solar power installations e.t.c.). For the case of Power line measurements are performed according to the IEC61786:1998. In the cases of transformers, substations, underfllor electric heating systems a mesh profile (with distances between points ranging from 0.3-3m) is followed in the decision of the measurement points. Technical drawings prepared by the technician/engineers dispaly the location of measurement points and the the low-frequency radiation sources under examination, as well as other objects that could affect the measurement result.

The Electric/Magnetic field meter is placed on a non-conductive tripod at a heigh of 1m above ground. In specific cases the field meter is also placed in two addtitional height above ground (0.5m , 1.5m) in order to examine the electric and magnetic field strength variations. For electric field strength measurements the field meter is controled with a PC form a distance of at least 4m, in order to reduce the measurement uncertaintys from the user's proximity to the measurement device (accorcing to IEC61786:1998).

Measurements are performed, at predetermined frequency zones within the spectrum 5Hz-400kHz, over a 30 second time frame for each measurement point. In specific cases the time frame might be increased in order to quantify the electric and magnetic field variations over time.

Nov 2012: Low frequency EMF measurements inside and outside private apartment in Yeri village, Nicosia, for the evaluation of electric and magnetic field emmission of the EAC substation installed in the ground floor.

Jan 2013: Low frequency EMF measurements inside and outside private residence in Latsia village, Nicosia, for the evaluation of electric and magnetic field emmission of the EAC Dekelia - Athalassa AC Power lines.

Jan 2013: Low frequency EMF measurements inside and outside private residence in Yeri village, Nicosia, for the evaluation of electric and magnetic field emmission of the EAC substation installed in the ground floor.

Feb 2013: Low frequency EMF measurements inside and outside private residence in Koili village, Paphos district, for the evaluation of electric and magnetic field emmission of the installed PV system DC/AC inverter in the ground floor and PV panels in the residence back yard.

Feb 2013: Participation in the Interlaboratory Comparison Programme for extremely low frequency(ELF) electromagnetic field (EMF) measurements in Athens, Greece. The event was organised by the GAEC (Greek Atomic Energy Commision) and the National Technical University of Athens. The interlaboratory comparison tests were held in the High Voltage Laboratory - National Technical University of Athens with the participations of 14 laboratories from Greece and the Sigint Solutions laboratory from Cyprus.
