Sigint Solutions EMF laboratory has been assessed by the Cyprus Accreditation Body (CYSAB), according to the accreditation criteria for Test and Measurements Laboratories, as defined in the quality standard CYS EN ISO/IEC 17025, and in 2012 received an accreditation to perform EMF Measurement Studies in the frequency range 30MHz – 3GHz.The EMF laboratory is also registered in the DEC's "List of approved organizations" which are accredited to perform EMF measurements in RF and microwave frequency networks.


EMF Measurements

The EMF measurement service extents, but is not limited, in the following fields:

  • Evaluation of Electromagnetic Field exposure in the vicinity of telecommunication base station installations (Mobile Telephony, TV, Radio, etc.) 
  • Estimation of Electromagnetic Field exposure for proposed telecommunication base station installations
  • Evaluation of Electromagnetic Field exposure for indoor wireless networks (WiFi, picocell GSM/UMTS, DECT, etc.) 


EMF Measurement Equipment

 
State of the art testing equipment from one of the world’s leading electronics manufacturer Rohde & Schwarz is currently used by the EMF measurement Laboratory. Calibration of the testing equipment is constantly up to date and the proper operation of the equipment test bed is repeatedly verified by internal procedure, according to the CYS EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard.
The equipment tested comprises of the following:

  • Rohde & Schwarz FSH6 Spectrum analyzer (30MHz – 6GHz)
  • Rohde & Schwarz FHS8 Spectrum analyzer (30MHz – 8GHz)
  • Tri-axis Probe Rohde & Schwarz TS-EMF-B1 (30MHz – 3GHz)
  • Laptop PC with specialized EMF measurement result analysis software
 
The aforementioned equipment test bed ascertains the full analysis of the electromagnetic field emitted by radio frequency networks within the spectrum 30MHz – 3GHz. The identification of the origin of the electromagnetic field emotions can also be establish through the list of licensed RF networks from the DEC.
Sigint Solutions commitment to Health and Safety regulations, enforce the use of additional equipment that will guarantee, at the highest level, the safety of personnel during the EMF measurement procedure as well as inside the laboratory premises.

Measurement Methodology

The methodology used is based on the Revised ECC Recommendation for measuring Non-Ionizing Electromagnetic Radiation (ECC/REC/(02)04) which specifies the in-situ measurement procedures in order to assess Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) for the purpose of comparison against limits of human exposure to EMF.
The measurement procedure commence with the selection of measurement locations that represent the highest levels of EMF exposure that a person might be potentially subjected to 



All the measurements are performed in the far-field region of the antenna using a calibrated Spectrum Analyser (SA) and a broadband tri-axis probe. The tri-axis antenna is placed on the tripod at 1.5m above ground unless the measurement exceeds the Decision Level (as defined in CYS EN 50492:2008). In this case measurements are carried out at 3 different heights (1.1m, 1.5m, 1.7m) and a spatial average is calculated according to the procedures that are defined in the respective European standards.
Measurements are performed, at predetermined frequency zones within the spectrum 30MHz-3GHz, over a 6 minute time frame in accordance with the ECC recommendations as per 1999/519/EC. “The results are extrapolated to match maximum traffic conditions and the upper and lower limits of the Exposure Quotient (EQ) are estimated considering the equipment and procedural uncertainties (as defined in CYS EN 50492:2008).

The national exposure limits have been defined by the Republic of Cyprus Ministry of Health, which has adopted the limits defined in recommendation 1999/519/ΕC.
